So what is an IDC and a IE ?
IDC = Instructor Development Course
IE  = Instructor Examination
Instructor Development Course
The full time IDC is conducted over a relaxed stress free 10 day period. The focus of the course is developing your teaching skills, and understanding the Padi system. You have already completed an entry level diving course, you learnt how to dive. Then you progressed onto a advanced level of diving, your learnt how to do different tasks underwater. Your rescue followed and you developed the skills to prevent and handle rescue situations. Then you took the next step, to a professional level. You become a dive leader, a instructors assistant.

Now we are going to help you develop your own teaching skills.

IDC
The idc can be broken down into 4 sections, Knowledge presentations, Confined water presentations, Open water presentations and lets not forget Dive theory.

Knowledge Presentations
With the padi system of teaching, knowledge presentation are quiet easy to conduct. We no longer lecture students on all the material in their manuals, we explain to them what they do not understand. How do we know what they do not understand, knowledge reviews, quiz's and exams.

A knowledge presentation is broken up into 4 sections, introduction, content, summary and overall handling.
Introduction = We tell them what we are going to tell them.
Content = We tell them
Summary = We tell them what we have told them
Overall handling = Training aids used, interaction with students

Candidates will give at least 3 knowledge presentations during the IDC.

Confined water presentations
A confined water presentation is broken up into 5 sections, briefing, demonstration, problem solving, control and delivery and debriefing
Briefing = introduce the skill, explain how to do the skill
Demonstration = you provide a clear, slow demonstration of the skill
Problem solving = rectify any problems students may have with skill
Control and delivery = how organized you are underwater, use of assist, was there any positive reinforcement for the students.
Debriefing = positive reinforcement, remind students of actual problems and how to overcome them in the future. Remind students of why you had them do the skill

Candidates will give at least 4 confined water presentations, with 1 skill during the IDC

Skill circuit
The same 20 skills you completed during your divemaster course are scored again. 68 points to pass, so we need to see plenty of 4's and 5's

Open water presentations
Open water presentations also have 5 sections, and consist of 2 skills. Briefing, problem solving, control, delivery and debriefing.
Briefing = introduce skills and remind student of the steps to complete the skills
Problem solving = rectify any problems students may have with either skill
Control = positioning of students, use of assist, communication and monitoring
Delivery = how organized you are underwater, was there any positive reinforcement for the students, environmental awareness.
Debriefing = positive reinforcement, remind students of actual problems and how to overcome them in the future. Remind students of why they need to know how to do these skills.

Candidates will give at least 2 open water presentations with 2 skills during the IDC

Rescue assessment
Exercise 7 from the rescue diver course, uncons diver at the surface. Make contact, call for assistance, rescue breaths, take equipment off and tow while maintaining rescue breaths.

800 metres snorkel swim
Perform a face down, nonstop swim for 800 metres/yards using a mask, snorkel and fins.

Dive theory ***
Dive theory consists of two parts, general standards and procedures and 5 theory subjects from the dive master program.
General standards and procedures = Open book exam (instructor manual/ guide to teaching) of standards and procedures covering all padi courses and programs.
Dive theory = Physic's, physiology, recreational dive planner, equipment and general skills and environment
*** Dive theory is not part of an IDC, how ever at PHI PHI IDC we do review
dive theory over several evenings during the IDC.

What do need to pass a IDC
Knowledge presentation = At least 1 of the 3 presentations you present must have a score of 3.5 or higher
Confined water = At least 1 of the 4 presentations you present must have a score of 3.4 or higher, Perform all 20 dive skills in the Skill Evaluation, scoring 68 total points, with no individual score below 3.
Open water = At least 1 of the 2 presentations of 2 skills must score a 3.4 or higher. Rescue assessment is a pass/fail
Dive theory =Demonstrate mastery by passing a PADI System, Standards and Procedures Exam – 75 percent or higher, Score 75 percent or higher on all sections of the Dive Theory Exam or retest until mastering the information.

Keep in mind that this is a performance based developmental process.You will have several opportunities to reach these levels – you don’t have to reach these scores on the first try. The staff will work with you to develop your abilities and provide additional presentation opportunities.

IE

What can you expect at a PADI Instructor Examination?
 The IE is an evaluative two-day program conducted by PADI Instructor Examiners. You’ll be asked to demonstrate your teaching ability, rescue ability and understanding of the PADI System and dive theory. The IE is pass-fail. PADI Instructor Examiners are highly trained professional PADI Course Directors who represent PADI’s international offices. Examiners may offer you helpful suggestions, but their primary job is to evaluate your performance. There’s no coaching at an IE, so you must go fully prepared.

Passing scores are the same as the IDC !!!
