Mergui Archipelago is an area of Burma, largely
unexplored, which has recently opened for visiting divers,
a collection of hundreds of uninhabited tropical tropical
islands with thousands of unexplored dive sites.

Excalibur Live-Aboards
visited these waters for the first time in 1999
diving some of the well known site such as "Black Rock"
and the Burma "Banks" but the main purpose of the
visit was to explore diving sites that hadnt been dived
before and out of the 20 dives we made on these trips 13 were
on new sites, Making our Burma trips more of a adventure,
With some of our guest getting to name the sites as well made
it a lot of fun for all. And after the success of our first
season we are going back for more but this time to save on
travelling time we will transfer all guest to the Burmese
boarder for boarding Excalibur giving us more time to explore
what Burma has to offer.
Black
Rock is an untouched infrequently visited pinnacle dropping
to over 80 metres, where Whale sharks can be found in numbers
along with eagle rays and of all the places around the world
this is the only one where the crew have seen White Tip Reef
Sharks swimming through guest legs on a night dive. A real
heart pounding experience. There are many other un dived and
un named sites that always are a pleasure to explore.
South Twin Island contains three
dive spots with an average depth of 16 meters. Large boulders,
covered with stag horn coral are home for the whole spectrum
of reef fish. Big schools of jacks, tuna and trevallies pass
by out in the blue. The wide plateau of North Twin Island
starts at 20 meters with clusters of sea fans, building a
safe haven for the colorful inhabitants. Curious, small white
tip reef sharks and barracudas are guiding the diver along
this outstanding reef.
The Burma Banks are one of the few
places where big sharks come close in shallow water. Nurse
sharks, reef sharks and big Silver Tips are in abundance.
A largely unexplored area, the Banks are a series of large
underwater flat-topped sea mounts with huge plate corals.
But the true reason for coming out here are the sharks, So
dont put your macro lense on for this one 15mm is ideal
however even saying that the picture on this page of the Silver
Tip was taken with one of those disposable cameras.
